Alexander, de 11 anos, enquanto ele atravessa o dia mais terrível e horrível de sua jovem vida: um dia que começa com chiclete grudado no cabelo e continua com uma calamidade atrás da outra. Mas quando Alexander conta as desventuras de seu dia desastroso para sua família otimista, ninguém parece compreendê-lo e ele começa a se perguntar se as coisas ruins só acontecem com ele. Logo ele descobre que não está sozinho, quando sua mãe (Jennifer Garner), pai (Steve Carell), irmão (Dylan Minnette) e irmã, (Kerris Dorsey) também começam a se ver no mais horrível, terrível e pior dos dias.
