A história acompanha as experiências do veterano de guerra chamado Cormoran Strike, que trabalhou vários anos na Royal Military Police, a polícia do exército britânico. Depois de perder sua perna em uma mina no Afeganistão, Cormoran Strike está apenas tocando sua vida como investigador privado. Após a queda mortal de uma modelo problemática de uma varanda gelada em um bairro nobre, todos presumem que foi suicídio. O irmão dela, no entanto, não tem tanta certeza assim e chama o detetive particular Cormoran Strike para reavaliar o caso.
